Who we are

About New Beginnings

We have an unbelievable group of people who we are proud to call our team. They are passionate kaiako with over 50 years’ experience between them, each one bringing their own unique set of skills to our teaching team. New Beginnings has excellent teacher to child ratios with a high percentage of our team qualified. We participate regularly in a mentoring programme to ensure our teachers are meeting and keeping ahead of the NZ Teaching Standards and are working towards their professional goals. All teachers participate in our First Aid training biennially, which ensures that a high percentage of our team are First Aid qualified at any one time. We are passionate about education (obviously!), and as such we encourage all of our team and support them through getting a qualification in ECE. In the meantime we regularly participate in professional development which allows us to keep up with sector changes, provide time for reflection, and develop new found passions.

Pīwaiwaka Room

The Pīwaiwaka Room is our designated space for tamariki aged zero to two years old.

Our Pīwaiwaka whānau work hard to establish relationships with all families at New Beginnings and set them up with a solid foundation for learning in the ECE environment.
Our team take great care to learn the routines of each pēpi and follow those here at the centre. It is a routine-based room where every child’s individual needs are upheld.

Tamariki in the Pīwaiwaka Room will have regular access to resources that allow them to explore all areas of Te Whāriki. Daily invitations to play include getting messy with water, sand, gloop, and art mediums such as paint. The pēpi will be supported to reach any of their upcoming physical milestones with a variety of obstacles and play equipment to navigate, as well as clear spaces to hone their gross motor skills.

Tui Room

The Tui Room is our designated space for tamariki aged two to five years old.

In the Tui Room we place great importance on tuākana/teina relationships, whereby our older tamariki take care their younger peers and the younger tamariki learn from their older friends. It is a cycle of learning with roots in the Māori culture that we embody in the Tui Room through the values of respect, kindness, inclusion, diversity, and whanaungatanga.

Tamariki in the Tui Room explore all areas of the curriculum through play-based learning, supported and guided by qualified and experienced teachers. Some examples of daily invitations to play are a variety of messy play experiences including water, sand, clay, and natural resources; early literacy – exploration of print and symbols; socio-dramatic play – a wide range of family play, dress ups, and theatrical resources; carpentry and investigating loose parts; number and counting games; and inquiry into health and wellbeing.
